How to sync multiple cameras for a DJ set video
Audio waveform sync, timecode and claps: what actually works when four cameras never started at the same time.
The problem
Every camera starts recording at a slightly different moment, and none of their clocks agree. Put four clips on a timeline and the DJ's hands will move at four different times. Syncing is the step that lines every angle up to one shared moment, and everything else (cutting, switching angles, reels) depends on it.
Method 1: sync by audio waveform
Every camera hears the same music, even if the quality is poor. Software compares the loudness shape of each camera's audio and slides the clips until the shapes match. It needs no preparation on the night, works with phones and action cameras, and works best when the music is loud and clear. It struggles when a camera has no audio, when a camera is far from the speakers, or when wind noise dominates.
Method 2: timecode
Pro cameras can record a clock value on every frame. If all cameras were jammed to the same clock before filming, clips line up automatically. It is the most reliable method, but it needs matching gear and setup. Hobby and phone footage usually has no shared timecode, so most DJ-set shoots rely on audio instead.
Method 3: a clap or a flash
A sharp clap in front of all cameras gives a visible and audible marker to line up by hand. It is a good backup when audio sync fails, but it is manual work and easy to miss at the start of a long recording.
Tips for easy sync
Record the music on every camera, even the close-up gear camera. Start all cameras before the set begins, not mid-song. Keep an eye on files that split every 4 GB or so: the pieces need to be joined or synced separately. If a camera has no usable audio, give it a clap marker.
How Setclipper does it
Setclipper lines your cameras up on one timeline and lets you check and nudge each one by hand. Try it on your own footage with the 7-day trial (card required).
Try it on your own set
Setclipper builds a multicam edit that cuts on the beat and makes vertical clips.
