Vertical DJ clips: framing that keeps the DJ in the shot
Why a plain center crop fails for DJ sets, and the framing choices that make a 9:16 clip work, from face tracking to split layouts.
Most DJ sets are filmed horizontally. Most people watch short video on a vertical phone screen. Converting from one to the other sounds easy: crop the middle. In practice, the middle of a wide shot is often the wrong place, because a DJ moves, steps behind the decks, leans into the crowd and turns away from the camera. A static crop loses them.
This guide explains what goes wrong with a plain crop, the framing options that work, and how to choose between them. It makes no claims about how any platform ranks videos. It is about making a clip that looks intentional and shows what people came to see.
Why a plain center crop fails
A 16:9 frame is wide, and a 9:16 frame is tall. Cropping a 9:16 slice out of a 16:9 shot throws away roughly two thirds of the picture. If the DJ is at the left of the frame, they disappear. If the DJ steps right, they come back, but half cut off.
Three common problems show up:
- The DJ is cut off at the edge of the crop.
- The frame shows the wrong thing, such as an empty part of the stage or the back of someone's head.
- The crop does not move, so the clip looks like a mistake instead of a choice.
Option 1: a tracked crop
General face-tracking tools follow a person and move the crop window with them. Done well, it looks like a camera operator panned to keep them in frame. Done badly, it jitters or locks onto the wrong person, which is a real risk in a dark club with several people near the decks.
What to check on a tracked crop:
- Is it the DJ and not a guest, a bouncer or someone in the crowd?
- Does the movement feel smooth, with no sudden jumps?
- Is there some space above the head so they do not look squashed against the top?
If the tracking picks the wrong person, correct it by hand or switch to another angle. Setclipper can make a vertical version of a clip, and you can adjust the framing before you export. Vertical clips are on the Pro and Studio plans. In Setclipper the vertical crop is aimed at the DJ only on cameras you tag Close-up; wide cameras hold a fixed crop and can miss the DJ, so check every clip.
Option 2: a split layout
A split layout stacks two views in one vertical frame. A common version puts the DJ's face or upper body on top and the hands on the mixer or the crowd below. It fits more of the story into the tall frame, and it solves the question of what to show during the lead-in, when the hands matter, and during the drop, when the face and the crowd matter.
Keep these rules in mind:
- Give the top panel the larger share. The face is what viewers connect with.
- Make sure the two panels do not show the same thing from similar angles.
- Keep a clear line between panels so the layout reads as deliberate.
Option 3: a single angle shot for vertical
If you plan the shoot, nothing beats filming one camera vertically. A phone on a gimbal or tripod, turned upright, framed on the DJ, gives a native 9:16 picture with no loss. If you can place one camera for vertical, put it where it sees the DJ's face and hands, not the crowd's backs.
Option 4: a blurred background fill
You can place the 16:9 shot in the middle of the vertical frame with a blurred copy of the same picture above and below. It keeps the whole scene visible, and it is a reasonable fallback for a wide shot of the room. The downside is that the main subject is small. Use it sparingly, for wide establishing moments, not for the drop.
Safe areas
Platforms place buttons and text over the picture. The bottom of the frame often holds the caption and the account name, and the right side holds the action buttons. Keep key content, including the DJ's face and any on-screen text, away from the bottom fifth and the right edge. Check the app you post to, because layouts change.
Quality and resolution
Cropping a 1080p horizontal frame down to a vertical slice gives you a lower-resolution picture. A 9:16 crop from a 1920 by 1080 frame is only about 608 pixels wide, which then gets scaled up. If you shoot in 4K, the same crop is about 1215 pixels wide, which is a lot sharper. This is simple arithmetic from the frame size, and it is a reason to shoot your main camera in 4K when your storage allows.
Captions and text
Short text helps viewers who watch without sound. Keep it away from the DJ's face and the safe-area edges. Use a clear font and enough contrast. Use no more than a line or two.
A checklist before you export
- The DJ is visible in the first frame.
- The face or the hands, not empty stage, fill the top part of the frame.
- The tracking never jumps to another person.
- Text sits inside the safe area.
- The cut points land on the bar (see our guide on drop clip length).
- Audio is loud and clean.
Frequently asked questions
Do vertical clips need to be shot vertically? No. Reframing from horizontal footage works well when the framing is controlled, and it lets you use the same shoot for a horizontal main edit and vertical clips.
Is a split layout better than a tracked crop? Neither always wins. A tracked crop is cleaner. A split layout shows more. Try both on the same drop.
Can the web clipper make vertical clips from a finished video? Yes. It works on a finished video you provide. It does not download videos from YouTube. It takes a Google Drive link, a Dropbox link or a direct upload. YouTube links are not supported.
What does the trial include? 7-day trial (card required; trial exports carry a watermark). After the trial your card is charged and the plan renews until you cancel. Cancel any time in Account.
Next step
Take one drop from a recent set and make three versions: a tracked crop, a split layout and a blurred background fill. Put them side by side on your phone and pick the one you would stop scrolling for.
